Which service you actually need

"Resurfacing" covers more ground than it sounds like. A contractor who mainly builds new pools may also do resurfacing, but building and resurfacing draw on different skills — surface prep, material mixing, and matching an existing shell are their own trade within pool work. As a general rule, a contractor who lists resurfacing as a core service, rather than as an occasional add-on, is more likely to have current pricing and material knowledge for that specific job. If resurfacing is what you need, filter for it rather than assuming every pool company on a list does it well.

Within resurfacing, some contractors specialize further. How to verify a license yourself

Do not take a license number on faith, ours or the contractor's. Every state that licenses contractors keeps a public register of who currently holds an active license. Look the contractor up directly on that state's board site using the license number they give you, and confirm the license is active rather than lapsed, suspended, or revoked. Requirements and license categories differ by state, so ask the contractor directly whether their license covers the specific work and the specific location where your pool is — do not assume a license good for one job or one area automatically covers another.

Cross-check the business name and address against what's listed here and on the contractor's own site. A mismatch doesn't automatically mean a problem, but it's worth a direct question before you get a quote. If a contractor can't produce their license number on request, or is vague when you ask them to confirm it against the state's public register, treat that as a reason to move to the next name on the list.

What to ask for in a quote

A resurfacing quote should specify the surface material by name — quartz aggregate, pebble finish, and standard marcite plaster are not interchangeable, and the material affects both price and how long the surface should last. Ask what's included: draining and acid-washing the shell, repairing cracks or hollow spots before the new surface goes on, replacing tile or coping if it's damaged, and hauling away the old surface. If the estimate mentions plaster repair as a line item rather than a full resurface, get clear on which one you're actually being sold. Get the warranty in writing, not as a verbal promise. It should state what's covered — surface delamination, discoloration, cracking — for how long, and whether it covers labor or just materials. A contractor who won't put warranty terms on the written estimate is not someone to sign with.

What should make you walk away

Be cautious of anyone who wants full payment up front. A deposit before work starts is normal; the balance is typically due on completion, with a schedule in between if the job runs more than a few days. Be cautious, too, of a quote with no material named, no timeline, and no mention of what happens to your pump and filter system while the shell cures — resurfacing takes the pool out of service for several days, and a contractor who hasn't planned for that hasn't planned the job.

Be wary of pressure to sign the same day a quote is given. And if one bid comes in dramatically lower than every other bid you've gotten, ask why directly rather than treating it as good luck — a contractor who can explain the gap is worth hearing out; one who can't is worth skipping. In general, resurfacing work that fails early costs more to fix than a properly priced job done once.
